Scary Stories – Coming Soon!

While you’re waiting for Tallington in January, as a special pre-Christmas treat, We Are Not Alone have invited the curator of the infamous Museum of Anomalous Experience, Dr Robert Ancilliary to record some special spooky stories in the run up to Christmas. Robert has selected three of his favourite exhibits from the museum, and will tell their stories, to be relased on 22nd, 23rd and 24th December 2013.

Here he is to tell you all about them.

Tallington – What’s it all about?

We Are Not Alone’s third series is a departure from their previous sketch show format, and has been named “Tallington”. The lead writer and producer Jon Thrower tells us what it’s about.

What is Tallington?

DSC_0540

Tallington is a seven part audio drama series from the We Are Not Alone team. It’s based around the idea that a time machine was invented and then covered up during the second World War. It uses the same blending of the 1950s, science fiction and the paranormal as our sketch show. We’re going to release it one part a week, starting on January 5th 2014. Each episode is just over half an hour.

His it different to what you’ve done before?

IMG_1043

We wanted to do try a continuous story, and it was an aim to get more people involved both in writing and performing the show. So we fleshed out the concept between five of us, worked out who the characters were and what direction they’d take, and then three of us wrote the scripts from that. Then we had a much larger team of actors, nine rather the original five. And we’ve nominated people to direct the episodes, whereas it was all a bit more informal previously. We’re all very pleased with the result.

What can you tell us about the show?

DSC_0546

Without giving too much away, it’s set partly in the 1950s, partly in the modern day, with bits scattered all through history, and it plays with the idea of a secret conspiracies. It’s partly a parody, and draws on lots of influences from science fiction old and new, but hopefully stands up on its own as a story. We wanted to retain some of the chaos of the sketch show, but there are a number of core characters this time who are slowly introduced through the first four episodes, and who have stories of their own.

In what ways has it turned out differently to how you expected?

IMG_1062
I think it’s fair to say that it was considerably more difficult than we had anticipated! Every individual element was trickier. With the sketch show we could pretty much just bolt whatever we wanted together, and shuffle the order to make it work. With a continuous story you can’t do that – it actually has to make sense. And with multiple writers we had to make sure the characters had a continuous voice, and that the stories hung together. And this then extends into the edit, where you need more sound effects to establish the scene and action, where with a sketch it’s much simpler.

Otherwise, when you’re writing something, you have a view of what that character is like in your head, and then the actors come in, and they each add more to it, making more of their roles. We’ve had a superb cast for this. It’s most of our original sketch show cast (Amy Hughes and Al Cubbin were unfortunately not available) plus people we’ve worked with doing theatre in Bath. It’s been a bit manic, a few late nights to get the recordings done, but the cast have been brilliant throughout and we’re really excited by the results.

We Are Not Alone Series 2 Episode 5 – The Smith Experiment

“I’m not scared. I just don’t think this is a good time to try the Pepsi challenge.”

Well, here it is, Episode 5 and the end of our second series. We’re following the exploits of Eileen Smith, the pioneer behind the first manned voyage into space, and watching voyeuristically as the whole thing goes up in smoke. Well, comes down in smoke, actually. We also explore the choices on offer when buying a new UFO, look into an expedition to Uranus, and consider the social life of the electron.

Series 2 – That’s the end of that, then.

Alan was confident that his new uniform would increase his manliness

The last episode of series 2 goes live tomorrow, and we hope you agree, it’s been a successful set of shows. We’ve been to the moon and back, although the hotels were mediocre at best. We’ve been to Metaluna, although we still can’t locate it on our Ordnance Survey map of Surrey, and are not completely convinced that’s not some kind of chopping instrument. After all this, in a piece of scheduling that could have been better thought out, we then left the Earth’s atmosphere for the first time in our final episode.
We’ve also had a number of other firsts, although strictly speaking only the first one can really be a first. There was the first episode, which was something of a first for us. Then there was the first sketch in the second episode. We also had the first occasion when everyone showed up on time. And then there was the first episode to edited by a dog. Although I may have dreamed that.
I can also announce exclusively that there will be a third series, some time in 2013, with format and release dates yet to be decided upon. So now you can start to look forward to it, even though you don’t really know what it is, or when it’s coming. A bit like being pursued by a surrealist father Christmas. Only funnier.
In the meantime, we’ll be continuing to update the website and announce other projects that our team are involved in via facebook and twitter.
Keep watching the skies!

We Are Not Alone Series 2 Episode 4 – Our Island Earth

“That’s a Shlesheim and Werpenwarper laser pistol and you’ve had your sixteen…”

It’s Episode 4. Doesn’t time fly when you’re having fun? No? Well, maybe it’s just me then. This month, we start our new paranormal answering service, bring back the ten second movie people, and follow the heroic Doctor Cal Meacham as he battles some seriously non-threatening extra terrestrials.

We Are Not Alone Series 2 Episode 3 – The Day the World Stood Still

The year is 1953. Oh no, my mistake it’s 2012. Gosh, I must have overslept. Well, anyway, there’s an enormous silver saucer landing in Hyde Park, and no one seems to know quite what to do about it, we try to get to grips with the sophistication of the alien psyche, and mourn the passing of a great inventor.

We Are Not Alone Series 2 Episode 2 – Blast Off

There were rarely disagreements over who would drive the rocket car.

Yes, it’s episode 2, and we’ve reached the point where we can actually call it a series. There’s rockets afoot in a Yorkshire village where a brass band, I mean rocket manufacturer is suffering when the government attempts to close down the space programme, we hear from a psychic in touch with the Venusians, and there was something else that was really easy to remember, but I can’t quite recall. And none of it is politically motivated. At all.

We Are Not Alone Series 2 Episode 1 – The Damned Village

When Brian had asked for a job “in computers” this isn’t what he’d meant

Episode one of the new series of the 1950s science fiction sketch show. A mysterious field has descended upon the sleepy town of Midwich and is getting right in the way, a new series of “star patrol” kicks off with the emphasis on scientific accuracy, and we make a startling discovery under the pyramids.

We Are Not Alone – Series 2

Series 2 will be available soon, with Episode 1 on Sunday March 4th 2012, and others following monthly thereafter. You’re probably wondering what we’ve got in store for you. No? Well, I’ll be fairly vague then.

Amongst other things, we’ll be flying to the moon, looking at how to rid your house of fairies,  investigating bank security, looking into the lives of super villains, choosing a new spacecraft, taking our first space walk, and generally pushing back the frontiers. Of course, as usual, there will be robots, aliens, bank managers, and other nasties.  Among the regulars, Nancy is back demonstrating some of the hazards of the World of the Future, and Professor Smith will be continuing his confidential military research.

Professor Smith was angry that the builders had installed his lab at 45 degrees

It’s pretty much the same format as series 1. It’s a fast moving sketch show, with the theme of 1950s science fiction. Each episode is a little over 20 minutes long, and is still completely free to download. You can get it from the website, or you can join our growing group of subscribers via itunes. Just follow this link http://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/we-are-not-alone/id416322002. Or you can subscribe to our newsletter via our website, and we’ll tell you when each episode is available. We promise not to bombard you with useless information. Other than our episode release dates, that is. If you enjoy the show, why not give it an itunes star rating, or review it?

We’ll also be parodying some famous science fiction movies, starting with “Village of the Damned”. We’ve also got interpretations of “Destination Moon”, “This Island Earth”, and “The Day the Earth Stood Still” lined up.

There’s also been a change in personnel – Amy Hughes is taking a break from providing voices for us, and so we’ve drafted in Al Cubbin to the team.

We’re looking forward to getting back to going back to look forwards.

Alan realised he had completely forgotten to download the new series of "We Are Not Alone".

Lots of love
